VALID Skills Statement — Maritime First Aider (Level 1)

  • The certified holder has successfully completed Maritime First Aider Level 1 training and demonstrates validated foundational knowledge and practical competencies for the safe provision of first aid within a maritime environment.

  • The individual is capable of recognizing onboard risks, assessing the scene of an incident and applying a structured initial approach to an ill or injured person while maintaining personal and crew safety. The holder can identify life-threatening conditions and initiate appropriate first aid measures within the scope of a trained first aider.

  • Validated competencies include the ability to perform basic life support, recognize cardiac arrest, apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation and support the use of an automated external defibrillator where available, adapting actions to the operational constraints of a vessel.

  • The certified individual demonstrates practical skills in bleeding control, wound care, basic trauma management and casualty stabilization, supporting the prevention of deterioration until professional medical assistance becomes available.

  • The holder is trained to recognize and provide initial support for common medical emergencies that may occur at sea, including allergic reactions, respiratory distress, fainting episodes and other acute onboard health events, operating within defined first aider limitations.

  • Competencies extend to the management of maritime environmental risks such as hypothermia, heat stress, dehydration and water-related incidents, with emphasis on stabilization, monitoring and ongoing care in delayed-rescue scenarios.

  • The certified Maritime First Aider can assist with casualty handling onboard, including safe positioning, monitoring, crew coordination and preparation for evacuation or handover to rescue services. The individual is able to use a basic maritime first aid kit appropriately and communicate essential incident information to emergency or telemedical support.

  • This certification confirms validated entry-level operational readiness to provide structured and effective Maritime First Aid support until professional assistance arrives. The certification does not grant medical authority and does not replace professional healthcare qualification.

 Disclaimer & Legal Framework

  • A First Aider is a trained individual without a healthcare professional status who provides first aid within the scope of basic support and immediate response until professional assistance becomes available. Actions are limited to non-invasive practices aimed at preserving life, preventing deterioration and supporting the injured or ill person.

  • Training is delivered in accordance with international first aid standards and is based on current scientific guidelines. Certification documents the successful completion of a training programme of a defined level and does not constitute an official academic qualification, professional licence or healthcare status.

  • The First Aider acts strictly within the knowledge and competencies acquired through training and must not exceed their scope of practice, perform interventions for which they are not trained, and must seek professional assistance as soon as possible.

  • First aid is provided under the principles of good faith, reasonable care and proportionality of actions, with priority given to personal safety, scene safety and respect for the individual.

  • Each certified First Aider is required to comply with the legal framework of the country in which they operate, act in accordance with applicable laws, respect the sexual and human dignity of the individual and demonstrate a humanitarian approach in every incident.

  • First aid provided constitutes emergency support and does not guarantee a medical outcome. The progression of an incident may be influenced by factors beyond control, including environmental conditions, response time, underlying medical conditions and available equipment.

  • Certification confirms assessment of skills at the time of training and does not represent a permanent guarantee of competence, as skills require regular refresher training and continued practice.

  • The training organisation and instructors are not responsible for the use of knowledge outside the training scope, for application of techniques beyond First Aider competencies or for independent decisions made during real incidents.

  • The First Aider must protect personal data, seek consent where feasible and act with respect for privacy, dignity and individual rights, without ever exceeding their knowledge, competencies or the limits established by applicable law.
